About MyPass

For over 10 years, MyPass has worked to create safer, more productive workplaces by redefining how people, organisations and industries connect.

What is MyPass?

MyPass is a multi-award-winning technology that empowers workers to manage their training and competency information through a digital Skills Passport.  We simplify workforce management for organisations in highly-regulated industries by removing compliance gaps. For our customers, this is about two things: reducing risk by accessing real-time compliance data, and reducing back-office costs by up to 70% through more streamlined processes.

In short, we are creating a global worker credentialing platform designed to save time, and reduce risk in the workplace.

Our Purpose and vision

Our core purpose as an organisation is to ensure critical industries have safe and capable workers.

Safety is at the core of the services we provide, ensuring organisations have the right people, with the right skills in the right roles. We specialise in compliance and when compliance is done right, people's safety remains priority number one. Capable: ensuring workers have the right competencies before arriving on site.

Our vision is to be the world’s trusted record of who is safe, skilled, and ready to work.

How it all started

MyPass evolved from an idea born of frustration into a multi-award-winning global tech innovator. Our close-knit team works hard to deliver what our founder Matt Smith set out to achieve: empowering safe, agile and connected communities.

The Problem That Started It All

In 2013, Matt Smith was working as an operations manager in the Resources sector, deploying crews of 50 to 500 workers to high-risk sites each week across Western Australia. What he witnessed was a system that put workers at risk.

Managing skills and competency information for casual workers contracting across multiple companies was a convoluted nightmare. Massive Excel spreadsheets, standalone systems that couldn't talk to each other, and constant manual updates created information gaps that represented real risks to people coming home safely from every shift.

The numbers told the story: 115 process steps between receiving a request for workers and having that crew arrive on-site job-ready. 40% of those steps involved manually updating spreadsheets, creating operational costs and risks across the entire supply chain.

This wasted time and resources for everyone: workers, service providers, and site owners alike.

From Frustration to Innovation

Matt, a Mechanical Engineer by trade, had started his career on the ground—wearing hi-vis vests and work boots, coordinating large contractor groups. He'd built strong relationships with highly skilled tradespeople and learned first-hand what it takes to deliver projects safely, on time, and to a high standard.

But the compliance systems weren't keeping pace with the industry's needs. Matt often felt personally exposed, not having the hand-on-heart assurance that everyone in the field was trained and competent for their tasks.

So in August 2013, Matt and his wife Nerita took the leap. Backed by their personal savings, they founded Project Match Australia and built a pilot portal to match workers to shutdown projects. The pilots validated something critical: this wasn't just Matt's problem—it was an industry-wide challenge.

Building Something Bigger

By August 2016, Matt could see a bigger opportunity: to fundamentally reshape how highly regulated sectors operate by creating a single source of truth for each individual worker—a record that, with their permission, could be shared across the supply chain and across multiple industries.

MyPass Global was born.

At the center of this new model was the digital Skills Passport, designed to empower workers and eliminate the duplication of information across multiple organisations. Thousands of workers signed up for early access, and we demonstrated how we could reduce risk and cost for our first clients.

Growing with Purpose

By 2018, we had just 10 employees building our core development and implementation teams. We added enhanced worker pooling, compliance management, and onboarding functionality to ensure every MyPass user received direct benefit from our software.

Protecting personal information became our license to operate, and in December 2018 we earned ISO27001 certification for our Information Security Management System.

Over the years, MyPass has continued building momentum - gaining trust from large progressive clients, winning six highly coveted industry awards including AFR's Most Innovative Company and Most Innovative Product, and expanding internationally.

Today, our team has grown to over 100 engaged MyPassers who share one mission: to fundamentally change the way entire industries operate, ensuring every worker has the right to a safe workplace and goes home to their families every night.
