How MyPass Unlocked Efficiency, Safety, and Global Expansion

Methanex, a global leader in methanol production, faced a cumbersome contractor onboarding process that threatened their operational efficiency and compromised safety during shutdowns and turnarounds. By deploying MyPass, an end-to-end contractor onboarding and compliance platform, Methanex streamlined their workflows, significantly reduced costs, and increased safety. The success of this transformation has led to a Global Master Services Agreement between MyPass and Methanex, extending the solution to Methanex operations worldwide.

The Drivers for Change: A Web of Manual Processes

The Problem Landscape:

Methanex’s Canadian operations were using a complex, manual contractor onboarding system that suffered from a lack of real-time visibility into contractor compliance. This problem was magnified during critical periods like Shutdowns and Turnarounds, where:

  • Delay at Gates: Contractors were often delayed at entry points, causing workflow interruptions.
  • Reactive Information Gathering: Capturing contractor information was done in a 'top-down' fashion, leading to administrative bottlenecks.
  • Impact on Operations: These inefficiencies extended Turnaround durations, resulting in lost production, rework, and spiralling training and logistics costs.

A Way Forward Through Innovation

Following the success of their New Zealand team's use of MyPass since 2018, Methanex’s Canadian operations decided to integrate the platform into their workflow. MyPass provided:

  • End-to-End Onboarding: From pre-screening to Methanex-specific induction through integrated eLearning modules.
  • Real-time Training Verification: Contractors could self-onboard remotely, gaining real-time access to their validated training data.

Tangible Results: A Transformation Story

Within a short span, Methanex realised significant benefits:

  • Cost-Efficiency: Reduced the annual cost of online training by $338,000 at just one location.
  • Operational Transparency: Achieved real-time visibility of contractors before they mobilised to Turnarounds.
  • Enhanced Safety: Enabled in-field safety interactions through the Skills Passport, assuring that only qualified workers were performing tasks.
  • Administrative Efficiency: Lightened the workload for Methanex site administrators, allowing for a more focused approach to core activities.

Next Steps: Global Expansion

Given the resounding success in Canada, Methanex has signed a Global Master Services Agreement with MyPass. This will expand the platform’s use to Methanex’s operations in Chile, Trinidad & Tobago, Egypt, and the USA, promising a more unified, efficient, and safe contractor onboarding process across the globe.

Conclusion

Methanex’s journey from a tangled, manual onboarding system to an efficient, streamlined process through MyPass serves as a beacon for operational transformation. It not only highlights the power of digital solutions in reducing costs and improving efficiency but also underscores the importance of safety and compliance in modern industrial operations.
